"New addition brings love:" Our staff decided to do a double truck feature on adopted students or who have adopted children within their family. The story, "New addition brings love" shares the Alexander family's quest to adopt a young boy from Ethiopia. When doing interviews of family members, each one of them broke down in tears talking about the love they have for their little brother and son. They discussed the love in their family and the hardships they have experienced adopting from a foreign country. This made the story more important to write; the human interest and emotion was unparalleled to anything I previously written.
The road ahead: As editor in chief, every issue I write a commentary. The first issue of this year, I wrote a timely piece on Hurricane Irma and how we faced challenges at the school and local level. It was important to address because the Central Florida community faced great devastation, and the aftermath was the worst of a hurricane in over a decade. Writing commentary has challenged me as a writer. It has helped me expand past my comfort zone of features and editorial writing and thus grow.

"Club provides local government exposure:" Law and Government Explorers' is a county wide organization that reached out to Boone to gain traction. The participants have the opportunity to meet with local government officials to learn about their positions in local government. Attending a meeting provided a unique opportunity to witness the interactivity between students and guest speakers. This story gives a featurised vision to something that empowered students to get involved in politics and law.
