1-to-1
This news story was definitely the hardest and most rewarding piece I have written. The story discusses the initiative to give all high school students a school provided laptops in Orange County Public Schools to help students become more acclimated in a rising-technology world. The news gathering aspect makes this story very factual. I interviewed six people, including those at the school board level to gain further insight onto how this initiative would really improve student needs. It addresses the benefits, potential problems, its expected path and why it is important while providing extensive research on how computers are vital to becoming more marketable in the future. This earned an All-Florida ranking from the Florida Scholastic Press Association.
football players utilize new field
In the 2016-17 school year, Boone spent the entire year fundraising for "Revive the Tribe," an initiative to construct a new football field and upgrade the overall look and functionality of our sports complexes. The fundraiser generated over $1 million. During the summer, the old field was deconstructed and the new one was created. Once ready for the first practice, the local community was invited due to their efforts toward Revive the Tribe. This story showcases timeliness, proximity and newness, and emphasizes the impact on the Boone community. The first practice was on Tuesday we returned to school, and it was posted the following day, so this functioned as a "welcome back" story, and it was extremely relevant to a lot of students who were eager to see the new field.
